Ourania is a name referring to one of the 40 virgins of the Christian tradition, that were tortured to death by the ruler of Thrace Licinuius. The 40 girls refused to deny their Christian faith and become pagans, therefore were punished with death. The Greek Orthodox church celebrates their nameday on September 1st.

However, in Greece, most women with the name Ourania celebrate their nameday on January 6th, the day of Theofania – the appearance of God to people.   1. Thank you so much for this info! My godfather wanted to name me after a Greek goddess or at least from ancient history but was forced to concede to the Greek tradition of naming me after my yiayia (grandmother)

    It seems both prevailed!! With the combination of my Greek name and my Anglo/Scottish married surname it is quite a romantic as well as a powerful name 🙂
