Origin of name Efimia – Agia Efimia (St Efimia)

Efimia was a woman who lived during the times of the Emperor Diocletian. She was born in a very religious family and her parents taught her all the Christian virtues, so Efimia became a woman with strong religious temperament and beliefs. When the pagan ruler of Asia Minor, Priskus, ordered all the habitants to attend a feast for God Ares, Efimia decided to refuse, in order to avoid celebrating the pagan symbols. This is the reason why she was put to jail. During this time, her enemies tried to convince the woman to adopt paganism, but she kept refusing. At the end, they started torturing her and she suffered a violent death, when wild animals ate her alive.

The Orthodox Church declared her a Saint and celebrates her nameday on September 16th.
