Origin of name Dorotheos – Martyr Dorotheos
Dorotheos was a man who lived during the reign of Diocletian. He was a priest who stood out due to his higher education, but also due to his commitment to faith and truth.
When the persecutions against Christians started, his followers persuaded him to leave the regions where Christians were persecuted, so Dorotheos left Dissos, a city in Thrace, but he returned a few years later, when things became little better. He continued supporting the poor and in need people.
Dorotheos lived for many years and thus lived during the reign of Julian who also protected paganism. Dorotheos was arrested this time and was tortured to death, at the age of 107, in 362AD.
The Orthodox Church declared him a saint and celebrates the nameday of Dorotheos on June 5th.
