The name Venizelos is not included in the Greek Orthodox Calendar because it’s not a Christian name.
It’s an hommage to Eleftherios Venizelos (Mournies Chania, August 23, 1864 – Paris, 18 March 1936), who was one of the leading politicians of modern Greece and undoubtedly one the best Greek prime ministers, with major achievements especially in the foreign policy and economic reforms.
Venizelos doubled the territorial borders of Greece, and starred in the issue of the independent Cretan State and the final union of Crete with Greece. He also contributed to the liberation of most of Macedonia (the northern part of Greece), a large part of Epirus (North-West Greece), the Aegean islands and the organization of the country to modern standards, serving many times as prime minister.
Venizelos was also the man, who even briefly implemented an elusive dream of the Greeks, the connection to their ancestral homes in Asia Minor with the temporary occupation of Smyrna in Asia Minor Campaign.
After a declaration of withdrawal from political, life fled to Paris where he died in 1936. His body was transported and buried in Akrotiri Crete.
Eleftherios Venizelos is one of the most eminent personalities in Crete, hence the name is a tribute to the great politician.
